Ayşe Şasa

Dramatic Literature: scriptwriting

She was born in Istanbul in 1941. Her mother had Kurdish originality. She graduated from Arnavutköy American College for Girls in 1960. She studied in the department of Administrative Sciences in Robert College between the years 1963-1965. Starting from 1963, she wrote scripts for Turkish movies, such as “Murat’ın Türküsü”, “Ah Güzel İstanbul”, “Utanç” and “Gramofon Avrat”. She published her articles on cinema as a book, titled Yeşilçam Günlüğü in 1993. In February 2003, she published her work, Delilik Ülkesinden Notlar.
Apart from the ones that are listed, she also published two other books: Şebek Romanı and Ruh Ülkesinde Notlar. Ayşe Şasa’s literay identty is overshadowed by her success as a screenplay writer. This can be assumed as the reason for her not being included in the Encyclopedia of Authors from Tanzimat Period to Date. In the Dictionary of Writers which was prepared by İhsan Işık, there is only one sentence about Ayşe Şasa: “Since 1990, she has been writing essays on cinema under the title, “Yeşilçam Günlükleri” in the journal Dergah. She received 1994 Writers Union of Turkey Award in the field of review for her essays. (555).” Apart from her essays on cinema, she wrote a novel called Şebek Romanı. Her book, Delilik Ülkesinden Notlar is an essay collection and Bir Ruh Macerasından Notlar is a biographical interview with Ayşe Şasa.
Her biographical story which can be seen in Bir Ruh Macerasından Notlar, can be read as a story of “enlightenment” which is an important theme in “Green Romance Bestsellers”, islamic romance novels as described by Şebnem Aksoy and Pervin Kaplan in Radikal newspaper. Ayşe Şasa and Şule Yüksel Şenler are the the creators of this genre. Even though categorising writers will not show anything more than a generalisation, the expression of “muslim women writers” is a definitivie term when analaysing the green romance novels. The examples of this genre follow a characteristic path in terms of giving the message of “If you choose Islam, you will be happy.” Even though there are only a few writers of this genre, the biographies o two of them have been turned into books. This might lead to an optimistic assumption about improving women’s awareness, but more likely it shows an attempt to spread the “islamic awareness”. For instance, it can be observed in Bir Ruh Macerasından Notlar that with the specific questions that are chosen to be asked and with the writer’s answers, the readers are expected to see the “healing of writer’s soul”. The parts where she tells about her traumatic childhood and struggle when she besotted with many different thoughts is depicted more realistically, compared to the naive plots of the islamic popular romance novels. The sudden enlightenment that comes by means of a man in these novels, was experienced by the writer after she had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and it turned out to be a pathological case. Rauf Orbay is Ayşe Şasa’s uncle. It can be seen in her biography that her family who supported a “Western education”, “away from spirituality”, is a rich and elite family from İstanbul. Her biography is almost an example of the stories of Islamic enlightenment with a more realistic angle which can not be found in the novels of this kind. Therefore, it is not suprising to see similar plots in her own works. Her biography is an important element even when reviewing her Works other than her diaries. She defines her critical tone in these articles as her “movie reviews in her Islamic perspective”. (Bir Ruh Macerası, 136).
